This comprehensive gut renovation of a historic townhouse in Fort Green overhauled much of the existing interior in its entirety. But unlike many of our other projects, it’s success is centered around the restoration of original details and revitalization of its historical character.
The design’s restrained, spatial attitude calls into focus more subtle decisions, such as material and scale. Plain-sawn white oak is used in the kitchen, providing a rustic sensibility while the restoration of an original, mahogany handrail brings added life and tactility to an old stair. Similarly, long neglected, painted over fireplaces were stripped and refinished to reveal the original, Vermont green marble, returning a deserving sense of majesty and craft to a house in need of love and care.
There are two locations, however, where more modern interventions were used. 1) The kitchen located on the parlor floor (featured to the left), and 2) The bulkhead. Here, a contemporary, volumetric language is introduced, serving as a counterpoint to the more traditional details that distinguish the rest of the house.
