This comprehensive gut renovation of a historic rowhouse in Fort Green overhauled much of the existing interior in its entirety. But unlike many of our other projects, it’s success is centered around the restoration of original details and revitaliztion of its historical character.
The design’s restrained, spatial attitude calls into focus more subtle decisions, such as material and scale. Plain-sawn white oak is used in the kitchen, providng a rustic sensitbility while the restoration of an original, mahogony handrail brings added life and tactilitly to an old stair. Simialrly, long neglected, painted over fireplaces were stripped and refinished to reveal the orignal, Vermont green marble, returning a deserving sense of majesty and craft to a house in need of love and care.
There are two locations, however, where more modern interventions were used. 1) The kitchen located on the parlor floor (featured to the left), and 2) The bulkhead. Here, a contemporary, volumteric language is introduced, serving as a counterpoint to the more traditonal details that distinguish the rest of the house.
